My Student

Next month I'm going to be teaching a workshop for my guild on wall hangings made from silk flowers and tulle. Tom thought he wanted to see if he could make one, so Monday he began a project.

Here he is pressing his fabric for the background, borders and backing.

Sewing his background and borders. He really likes my little Featherweight.

Selecting the flowers to use

And arranging them

Layered with tulle and batting and ready to quilt

This was a busy week for us, so he wasn't able to start quilting until Wednesday

He finished the quilting yesterday

I bound it for him this morning (that's his least favorite part of the quilting process and I've convinced him there is no shame in letting someone else do it for you).

Didn't it turn out nice?

It's a Christmas present for his mother. Hope she doesn't read this before she gets it!
Tom thinks if he can do this, then anyone can. Hope the students next month feel the same.

Here's a link to projects made by people I've taught in the past

And some of the many I've made

I could just get lost looking at the beautiful pieces you have helped inspire. I wish we were closer so I could join your class. Can't wait to see what they come up with. cheryl

I just went to your site...those are awesome...and it is just silk flowers? Do you glue them down and then sew around them? Did I miss that part...will have to go back and reread.

Very nice job Tom and Teacher Mary! I still have mine and fond memories of learning the process.

Kudos to Tom on a lovely project, his mom will cherish it. I had to laugh at him using the featherweight, it looked so tiny next to his big man hands LOL.

I am convinced I am your singular failure at teaching this method. It's easy, nothing to it, that stinkin' Stacia picked it up on the very first lesson.

I am totally free-motion challenged. Just the thought of "free motion" is totally against my nature.

This turned out beautifully Tom, congratulation.

And I got my question answered about who made all the projects in the link you sent me Mary.

You are two awesome people and I'm so happy I know you.
