Redwork Opportunity Quilt

This quilt has won half a dozen or more blue ribbons and has  been appraised at over $2,000.  It could be yours! Made by members of the Little Balkan's Quilt Guild in Pittsburg, KS,  it is a redwork quilt (see inset) which means a Christmas-themed picture is embroidered in red in each block. It is hand quilted. A $1 donation to the Little Balkans Quilt Guild gives you one chance to win the quilt. You can donate as much as you like, increasing your chances to win. What a deal! Autumn Trails

It's getting to be that time of year again.  The Little Balkan's Quilt Guild of Pittsburg, KS holds a quilt show every year on Labor Day weekend.  In addition to a couple hundred great quilts on display, we also offer an opportunity guilt each year as our major fundraiser. 

This year our quilt is a design by Judy Laquidara who lives just across the KS/MO border and graciously allowed us to use the design  for this purpose.   By now most of you are probably familiar with the great borders Judy designs for all of her quilts and this one is no exception incorporating Snail's Trails blocks. The quilt is called "Autumn Trails".  It was pieced and hand quilted by members of our guild and measures 74 X 85". 

Tickets are $1 each. If you'd like to be the lucky winner (need not be present), contact me via the email in my profile and I'll give you the information.  It only takes one ticket to win but of course more will improve your chances! 

Piles of Quilts & A Reminder

My friend, Cynthia, has judged the Iowa State Fair for many years. This year they had a record number of quilts...800+. She and one other person judge all the entries in a single day! I can't imagine. You can read about it and see some pictures on her new blog .

Speaking of quilt shows, my guild's annual show is Labor Day weekend. On the final day, September 6, we'll be giving away this gorgeous quilt made from vintage Dresden Plate blocks.

It's 90 X 109" and there are two matching pillow shams.
It's been hand quilted by members of our quild. Donations are $1 per ticket.

Have A Heart

Last night I read a post by Joann at Peaceful Quilting and learned that her husband is facing open heart surgery in the near future. In an attempt to ease the burden of medical expenses she is holding a raffle for a beautiful Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. In addition it appears that there may be other generous quilters offering additional prizes. The quilt is gorgeous and the cause is one that could be faced by any one of us tomorrow. So please stop by Joann's blog and think about contributing. If you think of it, tell her I sent you.

LBQG 2009 Donation Quilt

One of the most exciting parts of last night's guild meeting was seeing our 2009 donation quilt nearly complete. The binding still needs to be added, otherwise it's done. Actually Debbie is going to add a faced edging to the quilt rather than regular binding, so the curved ice cream cone border will be nice and smooth.

This top was donated to the guild by someone who picked it up at an estate sale I believe. The Dresden Plate blocks had been appliqued onto a stark white background and then quilted using a sheet as a backing. All of this did nothing to enhance the wonderful Dresden Plates and the fantastic vintage fabric. Debbie had the idea of taken it all apart and so that is what happened, with guild members hand appliqueing them onto a nice ecru fabric using hand buttonhole stitch. Debbie added the pieced ice cream cone border and it was hand quilted by guild members.

The resulting quilt is beautiful! I don't have the dimensions at the moment, but it is very large. We'll be taking donations throughout the coming months and the quilt will be given away during our quilt show Labor Day weekend. Opportunity Quilt

My friend, Trish Gabriel of North Carolina, has generously made and donated a lovely pink log cabin quilt to raise money for the Catawba County Breast Cancer Coalition.

Many of you may know Trish..she's an accomplished quilter who has had patterns published in popular quilt magazines. She is a past president of the Asheville Quilt Guild and an award winning quilter. Her work is of the highest quality. The last quilt she donated to this cause helped to establish a wig center in her county.

The quilt is 84 X 84" . The drawing will be held October 25, 2009. Shipping to anywhere in the U.S. is included in the ticket and donations are $1 or 6 for $5.
